        About My Artwork

                                    Virgen Series

Mexico is a country characterized for its rich culture and historical past. My artwork is influenced by Mexican Spiritual and Historical Heritage, focusing on the Female Divinities that conformed our past pre- and post- Hispanic Colonization. Iconography was an important element on the Evangelization of Mesoamerican cultures. Virgin Series is about the roots of Mexican evangelization history and how it impacted our culture today, but also, are a reflection of my personal journey and the heavy influence that my culture and roots has had on my personal beliefs, and the significance of the mother figure. My artwork retakes and empower the original roots of Mexican history, by creating a fusion that reflects Mexican identity in a way that the spirituality is not imposed, but rather, transformed in a way that honors ancient Mexican Civilizations, creating a duality that unify past and present beliefs that both are part of Mexican identity.

                                                    FAIRYTALES SERIES

Fairy Tales have been a part of children and adult narratives for centuries. Their stories started as an oral tradition that has been adapted to different versions that have evolved throughout history into modern times. Their mysticism as well as their symbolic meaning has gained popularity, especially among children. Fairy tales were a widespread way to indoctrinate children to cultural norms, lessons and instill moral values. For me, fairy tales allowed me to disconnect and cope with situations that I was not able to control as a child. They provided an imaginary shelter and filled my mind with positive memories. Now as an adult, I understand their deeper meaning and their circumstances that made the characters and stories relatable.  My series is about the soul of fairy tales, and a reflection of their symbolism, without shattering their whimsical charm and their identifiable subjects. My works aesthetic is inspired by Latin folkloric art, as well as Mexican religious iconography from the colonial period. These ageless narratives explore the virtues and vices of the human soul. Underneath each fairy tale is a deeper meaning that can be tied to contemporary and moral issues: for example, the plight of homelessness and immigration can be tied to the journey of Hansel and Gretel. The roots of Cinderella’s story are based on abuse that mirrors the mistreatment of some women today. This series examines these deeper societal issues through a more palatable lens for our times and questions the hidden meaning of these fairy tales.
